Italy's Court Legend Nicola Pietrangeli Has Died at Ninety-Two

Italian sport is mourning a true icon: Nicola Pietrangeli, a two-time French Open champion, passed away at the age of 92.

The player made history by emerging as the initial Italian to win a Grand Slam singles title, earning his maiden triumph at Roland Garros in 1959 and successfully defending the coveted trophy in 1960.

With a remarkable 48 career titles, Pietrangeli was long held to be the country's finest player prior to the advent of current world number two and four-times major winner Jannik Sinner.

"The sport in Italy is mourning an icon. Nicola Pietrangeli, the only Italian enrolled in the International Tennis Hall of Fame, has passed away," stated the national federation.

In addition to his two French Open triumphs, Pietrangeli also reached the final in Paris in both 1961 and 1964.

He boasts a record 164 matches played for Italy in the Davis Cup, winning 120 of them, and led his country to its maiden title in 1976.

Officials of the Italian Open, an event where he was a double winner, said: "We are profoundly saddened that we bid farewell to Nicola Pietrangeli, a true legend of Italian tennis..."
