Fed Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank reduced borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second reduction this year during financial volatility stemming from the government closure and trade duties.

Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The decision to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Shifts

In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release reads. “Price increases has risen and stays moderately high.”

Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job

The continuing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are on leave during the closure.

Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve usually analyzes BLS data to assess employment trends, such as the number of new jobs added to the market and the present unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in the previous month.

The figure of positions added to the economy in August was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.

Private Data Show Ongoing Decline

Though the bureau was set to release last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its release when the shutdown began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported recently that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said earlier this month, a trend he had previously said stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Increase

Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the bureau still released its price statistics for last month that showed that costs are going up, although slowly. Costs rose three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target price increase is two percent.
