Dallas Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones Fined $250,000 for ‘Inadvertent’ Obscene Gesture at Spectators

The NFL has imposed a substantial $250,000 fine on Cowboys owner Jerry Jones for an action he claims was an “inadvertent” offensive hand signal made toward attendees during a recent contest at MetLife Stadium.

Viral video clips appeared to show Jones making an obscene gesture at Jets fans, though he maintains he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Dallas supporters in attendance as his team clinched a 37-22 victory.

“That was unfortunate. It was kind of an exchange with our fans out in front of us,” Jones stated during a radio appearance. “Present was a large group of Cowboys fans—not New York fans, our fans. The entire stadium was filled with enthusiasm for the Cowboys.”

He further clarified that the gesture was entirely accidental, occurring amid the excitement following the team’s final touchdown. “I simply put up the wrong digit,” he remarked. “It was accidentally done. This is sincere. Should you call it unplanned, you can. However, it got corrected rapidly.”

Historical Precedent for Owner Penalties

This is not the initial instance an NFL owner has been penalized for inappropriate behavior. Recent cases involve:

  • Panthers proprietor Tepper was penalized $300K for throwing a drink at spectators in January 2024.
  • Then Tennessee Titans owner Bud Adams was issued a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a comparable offensive signal.

Jones, who is recognized for his publicity flair, reportedly has an estimated net worth of around $16bn, so the fine easily payable for the wealthy proprietor.

Offseason Issues and Public Attention

The incident comes after a controversial preseason for Jones, who faced widespread backlash from the Cowboys fanbase after the team dealt key defensive player Parsons to the Packers.

Additionally, Jones was a prominent figure in a Netflix documentary that examined his role in developing the Dallas franchise into the globe’s highest-worth athletic organization, despite its recent title shortcomings.

The NFL’s decision to fine Jones underscores its ongoing effort to uphold professional conduct among all franchise representatives, irrespective of their status or wealth.
