Crew Member Reveals Depression Following ‘Tsunami of Backlash After Historic Trip

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has opened up regarding her emotional downturn after facing a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

Amanda Nguyen – recognized as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the brief journey to space in the spring, which also included well-known figures.

The high-profile flight was widely scrutinized by some, who cited its expense and ecological impact.

Reflecting on the experience, Ms. Nguyen, who became the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the vicious response eclipsed her moment under an landslide of gendered hatred.

“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a public message, recalling a phone call from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the landing.

She characterized the press attention and digital reaction as an unprecedented psychological assault.

“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she wrote. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”

Eclipsed by Backlash

Ms. Nguyen, who has focused her career on women's health research and conducted tests during the mission, said all her lifelong efforts – including her studies and astronaut training to the symbolic importance of her heritage – was overshadowed under the tide of gendered attacks.

She is most acclaimed for her pioneering work championing the cause of survivors of assault.

Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was put on hold after surviving a rape during her college days, leading to a years-long quest for justice.

A Path to Recovery

Months following achieving her goal, she reports that the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she thanked the followers whose support pulled her through. “You were my salvation,” she said.

She added that despite the negativity, significant positive outcomes had emerged from the mission, including increased focus on her women's health research and platforms for her activism.

Flight Details

The fully automated spacecraft lifted off from Texas in April, carrying the six-woman crew on a 11-minute journey that crossed the edge of space.

The group of women also comprised leaders in various fields.
