Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

The English opening batter Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements from skipper Ben Stokes about the team environment not being "weak men".

The all-rounder made those words in several interviews following his team's defeat in the second Ashes series against Australia previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors are staring at defeat with a match to spare, Stokes noted he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" among the playing group.

"I've done all the talking over the past two days that I required," remarked Stokes.

But, following the opener made 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the media with a pinch of salt," he added.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "weak men" observation subsequent to his side were beaten in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The England squad afterwards went on a holiday to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and third matches.

Before the Adelaide contest, he said his team had held "raw" talks and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley asserted the messaging from the captain and head coach Brendon McCullum had stayed in line with their previous three years in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this Test."

The Hosts On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket on day four was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australian spinner Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left the chasing side 207-6 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435.

This means, Australia require just four more wickets on the last day to secure an unassailable three-nil lead after three Tests.

Defeat would prolong England's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes series loss.

This series will be completed in only eleven days of play – with England fell the initial matches in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been determined so quickly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," admitted the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"It's been difficult. They're a formidable side. It was always going to be hard coming here to face them. They were the favourites and they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

Although the opener's performance in Adelaide probably answers questions about his immediate place in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 in the team's second knock on Saturday, adding to his modest returns versus the old enemy.

Across 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a lower average.

But, the opener said any notion Pope is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – referring to the press – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played some really good knocks. This is noise from the outside. There is no chat of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," he concluded.
