Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for an extended period when numerous of them drifted across the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and close to the border with Belarus.

No fewer than 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a method that is highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that this activity become unprofitable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
